Political, Legal and Regulatory Environment

Sovereignty can be defined as supreme and independent political authority. Government actions taken in the name of sovereignty occur in the context of two important criteria: a country's stage of development and the political and economic system in place in that country.

Belize is a parliamentary democracy, a commonwealth realm, and therefore a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The government is based on the British parliamentary system, and the legal system is modeled on the common law of Great Britain. The current head of state is Elizabeth II, Queen of Belize. The cabinet is led by the Prime Minister of Belize, who is head of government.
